With festivities like Christmas, New Year’s Eve and the wedding season just around the corner, you may now be tempted to step out of the home and take your little baby with you as you socialise. While it may be relatively easy for you to make the transition from homebound new mother to proud parent ready to party, this may not be the case with your little one. She’s happy in her own crib and well taken care of when surrounded by family. But what happens when you decide to go out with your newborn? Here are some things to help you help her cope with the whole new world...
Keep it quiet Just because it’s party time for everyone else around you, doesn’t mean you can do the same. Opt for quiet gatherings of friends who also have kids and understand your needs and limitations. Parties that promise loud music, smoke and drink are definitely a no-no. So are sophisticated shindigs where a crying baby will get you glares rather than help. Choose baby-friendly environments that will not frighten her.
Keep it short You may have always been the life of the party, the first to arrive and the last to leave. But now that you’re a parent, it’s important to keep your baby’s schedule in mind when meeting family or friends. Visit a little after the start of the party, when everyone will have arrived and the party will be fresh. Leave as soon as you’ve met all the people you wanted to meet and tasted your host’s fare. In case they are serving the meal very late, politely inform them that you will be leaving at a certain time so that they can offer to serve you earlier or make some alternative arrangement.
Keep it familiar Carry a soft sheet or blanket from the crib with you so that she feels safely wrapped in a cocoon of familiarity. Or take a soft toy that she is particularly fond of. Ensure that she sees your face on and off and hears your voice in the cooing tones that she is accustomed to. For her, you’re still the whole world, so don’t suddenly disappear on her!
Keep it easy Dress your baby so she’s looking nice but bear in mind that comfort is key here. Pick simple baby-friendly styles in soft fabrics that don’t itch, and enough cover so she’s warm but not overheated. She may be tiny, but she can still benefit from a Pant Style Diaper from MamyPoko Pants, which comes in all sizes, starting from Small (for babies between 4-8 kgs). Its soft, all-round elastic band and leg gathers keep her snug and dry. It’s very easy to put on and take off, so changing diapers at a different place from your home will still be just as easy.

Naina Mahajan, mum to Arya Vir, five months.
The first time I went out with my baby, he was two months old and I was completely dreading it. I only stepped out for a quick lunch with my two best friends, but I wasn’t sure how Arya would feel in a noisy restaurant with so many unfamiliar faces around. Luckily, he adjusted quite well to the surroundings and his diaper, MamyPoko Pants kept him comfy and secure. No crying and no embarassing leaks to cramp my style! Now, I’m quite confident about taking Arya anywhere.
Shweta Shah, mum to Ashna, six months
We have a big family wedding coming up in December and initially, I was a little worried about how my husband and I would deal with Ashna during the functions. But my sister-in-law recommended MamyPoko Pants in size Small, which are easy to put on even on a very young baby. We did a few successful test runs to the mall and a few dinners out and I think that they will definitely make our social life easier!
